Places to Go: New England

There are many types of international students, but if you are like me, coming to America to study is your first time ever in the United States. If you are even more like me, you love traveling and checking a city or a state out of your traveling bucket list. Therefore, you HAVE to enjoy your 4 years as an undergrad by taking your school holidays or big weekends to travel as much as you can! I am sure there are great places around that are not even 1-2 hours away.
For our first post of "Places to Go", InterAmerica will present you some of the wonders of the New England region! New England is in the northeastern part of the United States and is composed of six states, which we will talk about more specifically soon. From previous experience, I would say that the three things that characterized New England the most is its great sports teams, the Boston-accent, and the crazy (one day is hot the other day is freezing type) but beautiful weather.

Without further ado, shall we start our tour?

With a mix of coastal cities, rural areas and small towns, you shouldn't go to Connecticut without getting to know the charming and artistic port city of New London, the historical capital Hartford, and the hometown of Yale University, New Haven. Also, if you are 21 or older, do not forget to enjoy yourself with gambling at the Mohegan Sun Casino and some wine in the beautiful vineyards Connecticut has to offer.

Even though you should not miss going to outgoing Boston and spending a day watching baseball and eating hot dogs at Fenway Park, there are a lot more things Massachusetts has to offer. Make sure to visit the fun and artsy college town of Northampton and the mysterious city of witchcraft, Salem. Also, spend summer time and warmer days at Cape Cod while eating delicious sea food and enjoying lighthouses, ponds, and ocean beaches - and then getting into a ferry to the resort islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

Find yourself during a hike within Maine's nature areas of Acadia National Park and the rocky coastline of Casco Bay and Bar Harbor. If you like sailing, go to Camden - if you like lighthouses and nice shops and restaurants, do not forget to pass by Portland.

With a beautiful landscape, in Vermont you will enjoy great hikes, skiing adventures, and a delicious maple syrup. The cultural capital Montpelier provides many museums and cultural attractions, while Burlington will provide you with the beautiful parks, lakes and marinas and Stowe with the outdoor recreation part of scenic mountain trails, climbing, skiing, camping and much more adventurous times.

Also known for its beautiful wilderness nature, New Hampshire is a great place to enjoy great mountains, lakes and falls. Enjoy the urban garden retreats and historic buildings in Portsmouth. Go to Hanover to visit the Moose Mountain and another Ivy League member, Dartmouth College. And last but not least, you cannot leave the city of Lincoln behind - make sure you go for a swim in the beautiful Franconia Falls and enjoy the winter sports at the White Mountain National Forest.

When summertime arrives, do not forget to visit the sandy shores and seaside towns with delicious seafood of Rhode Island. Home of large cities such as Newport and Providence, there, you will be able to enjoy not only sailing and Gilded Age mansions, but also many festivals, special events, and nights out at the live capital of the state - which is also home to Brown University, another Ivy League member. Finally, you can also get to enjoy the wildlife and beautiful scenic lighthouses at Block Island.
